the drive last night was quite ok, though i absolutely hated the fact that it was dark out the entire time - i got too used to leaving at 7 pm, and getting in around 2 hours of sun-lit driving. mental note - must clean inside windshield - the glare was hell!
also found out my tape deck doesn't work. i'll ask my stepdad if he has a tape head cleaner i could borrow - if that doesn't work, more motivation to save up for a CD player.
and i still haven't gone over 100mph in this car, but i did floor it this time around : ) it felt good : )

i got here pretty late, despite making it in exactly 3 hours and 34 mins after getting into the car in cambridge, and stayed up will around 12:30 talking to my mom. found out our brother-in-law is actually charging us to do our taxes - it made my skin crawl! but on the plus side, i think i got too little back (err, paid too much) anyways, so this is a good time to find out what someone else can make of the mess that is my taxes. though on second thought, i've been working all year, and in the same state as where i live, so they may actually be not-messy for once!

saw abi this morning...
i don't know how normal this is, as she's only a year and a half, but she knows who i am, and that i am family - therefore, i get to do fun things like be nagged to read to her, carry her up and down the stairs, and provide a lap to sit on whenever desired... but, she isn't affectionate enough to me to give a hug or a kiss...
but yeah - she's still absolutely adorable. she hasn't grown much height-wise, but she's definately getting older... the things she wants and how she articulates that has changed drastically, as well as her motions and the way she plays. it also makes me wonder how much having debbie in the house influences those...

also want to mention what a difference being 3-4 hours south makes - trees here are still bright orange, greenish-yellowish and brown, while MA seems to have gone to all deep-red and brown in the last few days. i'm hoping to get to run around in the leaves and take some pictures while i am here...
i'm also debating going to grond zero (or, as close as they will let me get) tomorrow, but i don't know if i am up to it. we'll see...

But I will *grin*
My boss yells at me for doing taxes for free. It's my job, and if I start doing things for free it defeats the purpose. At this point I have at least 6 or 7 people who have me do theirs, so we're talking about 4 hours of UNPAID work if I did it for nothing.

Don't get me wrong, I DO give my friends a break, I usually charge only $25 or $50, depending on how big they are. Compare that to H&R Block, whose base is at least $100, plus a cut of your tax (It's some percentage of your tax). And my bosses charge more, $250-500 base, depending. I usually do that because I can't tele or E File (yet) and everything is produced on paper, although I've done returns and walked people through the telefile process so they can get their money faster.

Too be honest, multiple state returns aren't too hard, usually you don't have jobs which straddle states, and that's where you can have a problem. I used to work for a guy who had hoecky players as clents and we had to prorate their salaries according to the states they played in, depending on the state. Believe me, I can't imagine yours are that super complicated.
Even mine are scary, because I'm self employed. But the programs we use take a lot of the thinking out of it.

Anyway good luck, and if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them for you. Ask Spudly. *grin*

I use Sandra Greene, our work accountant. She's reasonably priced (well, for my taxes, which are complicated) and quick. I can give you her e-mail address if you want it.

the thing is... this is family - in my family, you don't change family for anything. when we moved to cali, all our furniture and 2 cars were given away to relatives - not because we couldn't sell them, but because thats how my family works.
and the other part of that story was that my parents gave the brother in law a nice chunk of money and were being treated like one would expect when getting something for free...

I'd still charge family.
EXCEPT where there's another favor involved.
But then I'm not actually doing it for "free".
See the diff?
This setup with your uncle does sound like it sucks, tho, even to me.
I'd charge your parents a minimal fee, and do all the kids for free.
Incidentally, that's how my boss deals with that.
*hugs*
