yup, better
Jul. 14th, 2003 09:38 pmgoing back to umass for the first time in a while always sends me back to my first impressions of the place when i first started going there, and then the sights and the smells settle in and its a weird kind of comfort.
class was good. like the teacher, like the class, excited about the reading, the talking and the learning, and the syllabus looks very doable.
then, i pulled out of the parking lot, got to 93 and drove home trying not to stare at a sunset over boston.
yay : )

Date: 2003-07-15 05:42 am (UTC)I'm just curious what these are (your first impressions).
Mine was "ugh, I don't want to go here". This was back when I was applying as an undergrad in 92/93 and was comparing it to the other campuses I had toured (Wellesley, Simmons, Regis, Brandeis, BC) . . . UMB was my safety school - hence why I didn't go as an undergrad (got in somewhere else that had a better Psych program and gave me very good financial aid).
But then years later I ended up back there anyway . . . they have one of the best applied Sociology Grad programs in the country (aside from Chicago, but I wanted to stay local too). As a grad student I don't care much about what the campus looks or 'feels' like :)
When will you be there in the fall? Perhaps we can meet up some time for coffee or something.

Date: 2003-07-15 07:51 am (UTC)my first impressions of umass come from my first days of classes, where the school, ugly as it is, was the center point of my newfound independence and adulthood, and those associations are what come rushing back at me - both the empowering aspects, and the hindsight of how "young" those feelings were.
i'll be on campus tuesday nights in the fall - when are your classes going to be?
