san francisco in brief
Aug. 9th, 2005 11:06 pmthe night before the flight,
goat helped me load the two 90+ pound duffel bags into my car; i pulled up to the terminal at logan, jumped out and asked if i could do curbside checkin. when the guy nodded yes, i went back to the car and pulled out the ginormous bags - at which point the guy, a bit wide-eyed, said "you need to go inside and pay for those". it took a bit more to get another one of the guys to watch the bags as i went to park my car, and he was nice enough to wheel them into the terminal for me. seeing them weighed was amusing, too - first, one was put onto the scale long ways - with an end sticking off the scale at each side. because the scale is bordered by metal panels, the bag (or, the parts of them actually on the scale) only registered as 35lb or so. they then tried to stand them up, but these were cloth duffel bags, and standing on end and leaning against a side, they made the scale jump between mid-90's and lower 40's before settling at 55 and 63. i then got away with paying $50 for only one overweight bag.
in return for this, i got yelled at by a cabbie in san francisco - he didn't want to take me and my bags to the rental car place - i was lucky that the shuttle to the place drove by towards the end of our argument - which he then chased down, stopped and threw my bags into - as he was fairly determined to leave me and the bags about 80 feet or so from the shuttle stop (I had wanted him to drive me all the way to the place)
eventually, i got to
cuthalion's place, chatted for a while and went to sleep way too late.
i got up at 8am to make a 9am appointment to see a place - the one that's my current #1 choice - and spent about an hour and a half chatting with c.; i still have my fingers crossed.
from there, i got a little lost trying to find
digitalboy's new digs, but found my way eventually, and spent some quality time with him, m., their kitty and some sushi.
next up was the weird art deco apartment. it was nifty to look at and in a decent neighborhood, but i'm not sure i could ever be comfortable there, so that's off the list.
after that was a place with an MIT grad, which was all very normal - him, the living room, the kitchen, the bedrooms, the bathroom - the perks of that place were a garage and the fact that the current resident is leaving in january. he told me he was making a decision the next day and i haven't heard from so it's safe to say i didn't get it.
it was totally gorgeous out, and i thought driving around randomly wouldn't be a bad idea - and it wasn't, up until a half hour later i started feeling fairly beat, dehydrated and crampy. it took me about another half hour to find my way back to
cuthalion's and i'm still not sure if that was good or bad.
i hung out, barely keeping myself awake, until he got home, and then the two of us went to alameda for mexican food and ice cream. yum. i was still very wiped, though, and was in bed by 11.
on saturday, i woke up on my own at 9am and was on the road to see a studio in oakland by 11. i got a little lost on the way there, and must've passed by at least two chop shops circling the neighborhood. the landlady was fairly chill and nice, and while i'd be more worried about my car then myself around there, i'm fairly sure that's not the kind of neighborhood i want to live in.
from there, i drove further into oakland and spent time with p. and j. - played with their kitten a bit, and we went to eat super cheap sushi.
i left there running a little late and hit a bit of traffic before getting back into the city and seeing a damn nice studio in the mission - ended up spending like 2 hours chatting with the guy, and he's still giving it to someone else : (
after that was the other place i'm hopeful about - a cool chickie about my age, a busier neighborhood then the first place, but a cute (if smaller) apartment, a tiny yard and a decently sized room.
and after that, i met up with
starchy and we spent a while wandering around, talking, stopping for coffee and eventually grabbing vietnamese food. every few minutes or so i'd get happy jitters remembering that i'm moving to that city : )
after dinner, we headed back to
cuthalion's and waited for him before heading off to a party. i didn't succeed in being very social, but had a good time anyway.
the next morning, i was super groggy and couldn't get online. so, i cancelled my first appointment, which didn't seem super promising to begin with, missed the second one by misremembering what time it was supposed to be for, and stuck around for waffle brunch with
cuthalion and his family.
finding out i fucked up an appointment time shook me up a bit and it took a while for me to regain decent spirits. the first place i ended up checking out sucked - i was in and out of there in under 5 minutes. finding myself with a bit of free time, i called z., and to my surprise, he headed into the city to get lunch with me and then invited me along to see the maori exhibit at the yerba buena center, where he was meeting his friend m.; eventually,
cuthalion joined us, too. i may or may not write more about the exhibit later.
eventually, i made it back to home base for a little bit, and headed off to see the place i fucked up on earlier. it's in the middle of the presidio, spitting distance from the golden gate bridge - which actually didn't leave me very impressed - it's a bit too far out of the city for the price : /
from there, i found my way back to SFO, futzed around online (or tried to, the connection was sucking), and had a lousy time trying to sleep on the plane.
luckily, i was way too crunchy yesterday to have a bad day - today wasn't quite so lucky.
i also had an off first last night - i locked
sol3's keys in his trunk : / luckily, he was very understanding and we were only 3 blocks from his house. and, despite that, he still gave me a great welcome home.
